Project Cargo Insurance: What are the main pre-placement requirements?

Project Cargo is the term given to over dimensional cargo, i.e.: overweight and oversize cargo, which requires to be handled with greater care and under special supervision.  The dimensions of such cargo, also known as indivisible cargo, do not conform to the conventional standards for cargo shipments, not even in the case of international shipments.

Some examples of project cargo are: turbines, reactors, cranes, and wind blades, in short, large-sized equipment, which require an adequate infrastructure for transportation.

This type of infrastructure requires that specific logistics studies be undertaken to analyze feasibility along the entire route of the special cargo, from the time it leaves the supplier’s premises, including storage and packaging, to its respective delivery.

Many Brazilian companies develop projects of this magnitude, and the marine transportation mode is one of the modes most involved in project cargo transportation. Specialized vessels are generally used, like, for instance: breakbulk (for loose cargo) or roll-on-roll-off (for rolling cargo) carriers.

On account of this complexity, and because the risks of average are more significant and could lead to much larger losses, the importance of a specific insurance cover for this exposure in much greater.

Additionally, the underwriters need to have a thorough knowledge of the project involving the cargo, of the mode of transportation, characteristics of the transporting vehicle, risk management plan, and of all loading and discharge operations.
